Do I need a Homemaker, PCA, Nursing Assistant, or Home Health Nurse?

What’s the difference between a Homemaker, PCA, Nursing Assistant, or Home Health Nurse?

Have you been told that you require home care services in order to remain safe at home? The terms "homemaker," "personal care attendant," "nursing assistant," and "home health nurse" all refer to distinct forms of continuous help, which can be confusing. Do you know what services each offers and which level of care is best for you? International Home Care Inc. will assist you in determining the appropriate level of service.

Personal Care Assistants (PCAs)

Personal Care Assistants (PCAs) need more education and training than a homemaker. A PCA can assist with personal care activities as needed. A PCA can assist you or a loved one with mobility or assistance with dressing, grooming, bathing, eating, transferring, positioning, or toileting. The training is provided by us. A PCA is frequently covered by Medical Assistance, MinnesotaCare, and long-term care insurance. However, most work-related medical insurance plans do not cover PCA treatments.

Homemaker

What exactly does a homemaker do? Homemakers assist with any domestic tasks that a client is unable to complete. Laundry, cleaning, cooking, and food shopping were formerly simple tasks. Are they now difficult? A homemaker assists elderly with household tasks, allowing them to remain independent. A homemaker cannot give medical care or assist with personal hygiene tasks such as showering or cleaning teeth. You'll need a Personal Care Assistant for these services.

Homemaker services may be covered by Minnesota Medical Assistance (MMA), long-term care insurance, and other programs. If you're on a waiver program like the Elderly Waiver (EW) or the Community Access for Disability Inclusion (CADI) Waiver, MMA may cover homemaker services. Some families choose to pay cash for homemaker services in order to keep a loved one in their own home.

Certified Nursing Assistants

A Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) may be essential if you require a higher degree of care than what a PCA can provide. A nursing assistant, like a personal care assistant, provides personal care but can also perform some health tests. They can take and record vital signs, assist with medical operations, and set up medical equipment. Certified Nursing Assistants must complete a state-approved program and pass a certification exam before they may work as a nurse.

Nursing assistant services may be covered by insurance. Prior authorization may be required in a home care setting; nevertheless, many insurance policies will not cover ongoing nursing assistant services if the sole care delivered is personal care.

Registered Nurses

The greatest degree of treatment is provided by a registered nurse (RN). With prior authorization, most insurance companies will reimburse home care services provided by an RN. A registered nurse must complete a two- or four-year degree program and pass a state licensing exam. All registered nurses in Minnesota are required to be licensed by the Minnesota Board of Nursing. Our RNs monitor and train the PCAs and homemakers at International Home Care Inc. Our RNs also create the "plan of care" for all PCA services.
